On Girl Scouts, Grass Skirts and Growing Up--a Humorous Personal Narrative

When I was in 3rd grade, my mother was a single, working mom. This was pretty unusual in 1972. There were day care dramas and a slightly different lifestyle than my two-parent-household friends. It also meant she couldn't do the room mother thing at school, drive to field trips, etc. So I was really excited when she volunteered to be a Brownies troop leader.
